Italian Cultural Night – Boston Children’s Museum – Mar 9

PIB, in collaboration with the Consulate General of Italy in Boston, the Boston Children’s Museum and CASIT, is pleased to invite you to a family-fun ITALIAN CULTURAL NIGHT to enjoy music, dance and art!

Come and get entertained in fun and interactive activities related to the Italian culture, or just observe and learn from others. Visitors can participate to all activities, or just to some of them as they please.

The event will host the following activities and performances for children:

-Music: Tamburello, fisarmonica, guitar performance and sing-along of traditional Italian songs and “filastrocche”

-Dance: Tarantella lessons with the Newpoli music and dance group

-Art: see examples of beautiful Italian mosaics and create your own mosaic; learn about different Italian Carnival masks and decorate your own mask

When: Friday March 9^th, 2012, 6-8pm

Where: Boston Children’s Museum, 308 Congress Street, Boston

Admission to the Museum is $1/visitor from 5-9 PM, and the Cultural event will take place from 6-8 PM. Kids and their families are welcome! For more info please click here.

Visitors may purchase food at the Au Bon Pain restaurant in the Museum or bring their own food to eat in a designated area.

“A Commemoration of the Italian Holocaust Remembrance –Giorgio Bassani and the call for Remembrance in the in the Academy Award winning Italian feature film “The Garden of the Finzi-Continis” directed by Vittorio De Sica.

Special guest of the event: Dr. Paola Bassani, daughter of the Italian writer Giorgio Bassani. She is an art historian and an expert in the relations between Italian culture and French Art of the XVII century. She published a book on Claude Vignon and is the chief editor of the international art magazine Bulletin de l’Association des Historiens de l’Art Italien.

A severe sovereign debt crisis and the obvious inability to enact suitable controls and sanctions shape the debate about the future of Europe. As an entrepreneur and a longtime leader and voice of the European business community Christoph Leitl strongly believes that Europe needs not only a new policy focus but a different approach to integration. Together with Günther Verheugen the former EU Commissioner for Enterprise and Industry he recently published an English/German anthology (“Europe? Europe!”) where he likens the Union with a complacent company resisting the need for innovation and prescribes some remedies.

Christoph Leitl was elected President of the Austrian Federal Economic Chamber in 2000 and reelected in 2005 and 2010. The Chamber represents 380,000 member companies and operates a foreign commercial service with 800 employees and 106 service centers in more than 60 countries. He is Honorary President of EUROCHAMBRES with a special focus on the internationalization of European businesses and the creation of a global chamber platform. From 2002 till 2005 Leitl served as President of EUROCHAMBRES, the Association of European Chambers of Commerce and Industry. As current honorary President of EUROCHAMBRES, Leitl focuses on the internationalization of European businesses and the creation of a global chamber platform. EUROCHAMBRES represents over 19 million enterprises in Europe through 46 national and transnational Chamber organizations and a European network of 2,000 regional and local Chambers

Leitl visits Cambridge on the invitation of MIT’s Executive Director of Corporate Relations Karl F. Koster to mark 25 years of cooperation with the MIT Industrial Liaison Program.

Roscini: Europe, the banks and Italy – Dec 15

PIB and Goodwin Procter, in collaboration with the Italian Consulate in Boston, organized a meeting with Dante Roscini, senior lecturer at Harvard Business School (HBS) and expert in the global capital markets.

After earning an MBA at the HBS in 1988, Mr. Roscini spent twenty years in investment banking with senior positions, first as Head of European Capital Markets for Goldman Sachs (1988-1998), then as Head of Global Equity Capital Markets and Head of the European Capital Markets and Financing Group for Merrill Lynch (1999 – 2004) and finally as Country Head of Italy and Chairman of European Capital Markets for Morgan Stanley (2004-2008).

With his talk “Europe, the banks, and Italy: make it or break it?”, Mr. Roscini gave a description of the most recent economic and financial situation in Europe and Italy. The lecture was followed by a networking cocktail kindly sponsored by Sauces ‘n Love

OUR COMMUNITY, OUR LANGUAGE: WHAT ITALIAN AMERICANS CAN DO

This year has turned October into the Italian Heritage Month in the United States. In Washington, the House and the Senate have submitted a resolution to this effect in response to an initiative put forward by the Italian-American community with the support of the Embassy. President Obama, in asking “what would America be without the contributions of Italy and Italian Americans,” said he was proud to celebrate Italian American Heritage Month as well as the 150th anniversary of Italy’s unification.

They are affirmations of an extraordinary friendship. They come from the highest of authorities and match the unprecedented public participation throughout the United States in the events of recent weeks. I still have vivid memory of the tens of thousands of people along 5th Avenue in New York on Columbus Day. I received reports of similar manifestations of pride and satisfaction from our Consuls that organized over 130 events for Italy@150 <http://www.ambwashingtondc.esteri.it/150> .

I am calling on this very Italian pride when I ask the Italian-American community in the United States to once again support the Italian government’s efforts to disseminate the teaching of our language in American schools one year after we signed the agreement which, thanks to your contribution, reinstated Italian in the Advanced Placement program.

We set the scene by making 2011 an all Italian year in the United States marked by very significant moments such as President Obama’s proclamation for “Italy’s birthday” on March 17 and President Napolitano’s visit to New York. We have new tools to bring Italian closer to young Americans also through social networks: the website www.usspeaksitalian.org, a forum for discussion created by the Osservatorio sulla Lingua Italiana for students, families, and teachers has been active for several months now; we launched a portal, Italy4Kids <http://sedi2.esteri.it/sitiweb/AmbWashington/italy4kids/> , so that children and young people can learn more about Italy, its language, and its culture.

Now we need you: get together, talk, discuss the opportunities that learning Italian offers; tell your school’s principals, teachers, and parents to learn more about Advanced Placement Program (AP) Italian and its advantages, using the information and the contacts in the brochure that has been prepared for the introduction of courses in September.

Let’s speak Italian and let’s talk about it.
